Once part of the renowned Olmos Ranch, and later the Welder/Dobie Ranch, this sprawling historic Ranch was once the home place of famous American folklorist J. Frank Dobie. It was on this soil that his interactions with local Vaqueros gave birth to his calling. As he listened to the Vaqueros talk over campfires at night, he seemed to be seeing a great painting of something Id known all my life, the stories of the Texas land. Shortly thereafter he released his first book, A Vaquero of the Brush Country, 1929.
Spanning 10,247.552 acres of precious South Texas habitat, the high fenced Caballero Ranch has approximately 5.5 miles of boundary along the famed Nueces River, and some of the best deer country in the State of Texas. A deer management program in place for 17 years has produced an incredible native trophy white-tailed deer herd, which has benefitted from 10 years of DMP pen production utilizing native does. Look no further for a ripened trophy deer herd. Located 27 miles Southeast of Cotulla, this turn-key ranch is a must see!
Miles and miles of aerated clear cuts provide excellent quail hunting opportunities throughout the ranch and 48 acres of high fenced, irrigated food plots produce some of the finest dove hunting South Texas has to offer. The Rio Grande turkey have flourished throughout the ranch, benefitting from numerous roosting opportunities along the river, and excellent ground cover resulting from many years of relief from cattle grazing pressure.
Other game species include feral hogs, Javelina, Blackbuck Antelope, Axis deer and several wild Elk.
Hunting and recreational opportunities are endless, featuring many miles of improved roads and water lines, 55 elevated box blinds, 8 bow blinds, and endless other locations to develop more. The surface water on this ranch is big and abundant. There are multiple small ranch ponds throughout in addition to 11 fishable lakes up to 50 acres in size, these 11 lakes make up over 90 acres of surface area. All lakes are stocked with game fish. Duck hunting on the lakes should be off the charts during the late season, as weather permits.
