This farm has 150 acres of underground drip irrigation which was recently installed in order to more efficiently utilize water and to reduce labor requirements. Drip irrigation is reportedly 25 to 40% more efficient than sprinkler irrigation but is costly to install with typical costs being $1,400 to $2,000 per acre. The drip system was installed with wireless controls and all wells are electric which resulted in less labor required for irrigation. In addition, all fertilization and micro nutrients are distributed thru the drip lines.
There are 6 irrigation wells with submersible electric motors (4-20 hp and 2-15 hp) and pumps that produce a total of approximately 400 gpm. Recently installed high-pressure (50#) plastic, under-ground lines connect all wells to the drip system. Wells are approximately 400 to 470 in depth with steel casing and pumps set near the bottom of the hole. Water district maps show a 2012 estimate of the saturated thickness of the water-bearing formation to be 60 to 100. Three nearby water-district observation wells had 1.52, 10.06 and 10.25 declines from 2005 to 2015. The water-bearing formation in this area does not release water as fast as some areas with higher producing wells but appears to have experienced less decline in water depth than the higher producing areas.
This is an excellent farm with a well-designed, high-quality irrigation infrastructure and is located in close proximity to several dairies and feedyards. The owner would be willing to lease and continue to operate this farm.
