Mammoth Mountain Ranch is approximately 2011 acres located on the southern edge of the hill country (Edwards Plateau). It is located in both Val Verde and Edwards county, about 1.5 hrs. southwest of San Antonio. This region of Texas has been recognized as one of the most desirable climates in the state. Good rainfall, very low humidity, and good summer winds made this area one of the most sought after survival areas for the Indians. Mammoth Mountain Ranch contains two caves. One of the caves, The name cave was recognized in a book called Caves of Carta Valley. This cave has 100s of names carved into the walls, from travelers and outlaws who dominated the western region in the 1800s and early 1900s. The other cave Fallen Stalagmite Cave, was mapped in 1969 to have mammoth bones, and a petroleum product covering the ground in the lowest level inside.
